Is there a big difference between the 6 and 8 ft antennas as far as distance for transmitting and receiving purposes? I am using this on my 18ft. fishing boat in Canada. How about the nylon ratchet mount, Is it strong enough to support the antenna while moving? Thanks for the help. Gene

Thank you for your question. Antenna height in comparison to the horizon helps with radio transmission--but there are a lot of other factors to factor in such as antenna load ratings and the local environment. On a small boat---while 8ft high can be ideal--the 6ft performance (given equal build and antenna load ratings) will be very similar. The plastic mount will work fine while underway---just realize that at some point it will break down and break ---a metal antenna mount is a better permanent solution.
